It’s being played out as we write this e-sight, the biggest single game sports event of the year. The Superbowl is the biggest in terms of television audience (over 3 million extra viewers tune in simply for the half time entertainment), and biggest in terms of advertising revenue. Advertisers commit US$3.5 million of one 30 second ad to appear on almost half of all American TV sets. (The same ad cost only $42k in 1970).
Big TV audiences equals big sales, with cases of beer sold on the day reaching 50 million, chicken wings for the week 125 million and pounds of avocados for guacamole equating to 71 million. BIG NUMBERS! Which means big opportunities for advertisers and their agencies to tap into multi-millions of eyeballs. Ad agencies work overtime to create ads that will be potentially viewed before the game, and talked about long after the post-game hangovers are gone.
Below we’ve spotlighted a couple of ads for cars to bring you a sample of just one category showing. Stay tuned in the days ahead where we’ll bring you the pick of the crop once the stats are out for the best of the best. You may not get the game, but the ads alone are definitely worth a look. Enjoy!
